Unit Support Structure
Our Military Explorers Unit Support Structure Diagram below shows the "Organization Flow" of the various organizations that work effortlessly to support the adult staff and young adults in setting up and operating a Military Explorer Unit. Under the auspices of the BSA Affiliate organization, Learning for LIfe (LFL), Exploring Division (a Career Education Support Group of various careers), the Department of the U.S. Military Explorers (MX) supports the various units categories by "Military Branches." Currently in operation is the Air Force Explorers, Army Explorers, Marine Explorers Units, and Military Clubs. The local LFL Exploring Representative normally occupy offices in the nearest BSA Council office (or On-line) to handle initial legal setup charter paperwork, and annual renewals for legal paperwork and required fees. One of the main functions of MX is to assist in initializing your approval to establish your unit.
.
Initializing a new Unit starts with a group of five Adult Advisors, and 5-7 Cadets. MX is required to vet out the adult leaders and assist with initial establishment. A Unit is initially sponsored (generally) by a local Veterans Organization such as MOA, VFW or American Legion Post, or School, and is designated as its "Official Sponor", which can sometimes include an annual monetary amount to help fray administrative cost in running that unit.
.
Unit leadership can then reach out to a local (actual) U.S. military organization for potential classroom space, veterans/civilians who want to get involved as leaders / instructors, or utilize facilities to conduct a training exercise. An MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) Agreement is normally signed by that local base command section for use of those faclities, and by the assigned Explorer Unit Commander. Explorer Unit Commanders always recognize and understand that their operations may have to take a back seat, by that base's military mission or requirments from time to time. It is also their responsibility to brief the U.S. Military Organization base Commander from time to time, at least annually (as a Base Unit Tenant), on the on-goings of their organization and on any issues of importance. The base commander is requested to establish a "Liaison Officer" for your Military Explorer Unit to assist in coordination/communication to that base commander.
MX assists the initial Unit Command with suggestions of type Training, Curriculums, Training materials, brouchures, recruiting, marketing by adding their presence (Unit Web-page) to the MX Web site, conduct national Training seminars for leadership, and cadet leadership. Once a Unit is activated by the Dept. of U.S. Military Explorers (certifying all requirements are fulfilled), it will issue an MX Charter with your Organization Name and Designators. Generally when a new unit is establilshed a decision is made as to the type of training & personnel structure (An Officer Preparatory Program or an Enlisted Preparatory Program). This is based on the experience, training and availability of your Adult Advisors.
